valley (Free Coupon Giveway!) I Entered Into The Valley Of The Jolly Green GiantWhen the Green Giant called on me to enter into his valley of vegetables in Minnesota, I assumed he is a gentle creature, so I agreed to go. He’s a vegetarian, after all; not a hungry carnivore in search of a human buffet. Just look at how he towers over those trees. Go on….wave to him.

testhelmet (Free Coupon Giveway!) I Entered Into The Valley Of The Jolly Green GiantAs you can see, I was very excited to not only meet the Giant, but also to wear a helmet and get access to the test plant to see how fresh corn goes from the cob into the can. Their Niblets happen to be the corn of choice I’ve been shoving into the Greedy Family’s food trap for years now, so seeing those Niblets get canned was like meeting a celebrity food.

corntalk (Free Coupon Giveway!) I Entered Into The Valley Of The Jolly Green GiantWhat I appreciated more than anything was the enthusiasm of the people who work for Green Giant. The food scientists are really smart and truly dedicated to bringing the best product to our hungry tables. I honestly did not think there were companies out there that still cared. But guess what. Green Giant has respect for the consumer. It’s evidenced in how they do their jobs. cornfield (Free Coupon Giveway!) I Entered Into The Valley Of The Jolly Green GiantNot only that, but they have respect for the land the food is grown on. Before I went on my trip, Health-hater Husband and I just happened to get into this crazy debate about how one day, our land wouldn’t be able to produce enough food to feed the explosion in the greedy population (but I disagreed). And alas! What I learned from the Giant is that they are harvesting more food from the same amount of land (compared to prior years) through their sustainability efforts.

From Green Giant’s Sustainability webpage: “Through farming techniques and better seed hybrids, we’re getting more vegetables from every acre of land. In fact, over the last 35 years our farmers have been able to double the amount of sweet corn they can produce on the same amount of land. That means more food for the world and fewer acres dedicated to agriculture.”

Booyah! Josie wins that debate. Health-hater is the loooser!

lunchtoast (Free Coupon Giveway!) I Entered Into The Valley Of The Jolly Green GiantEveryone was amazing. The other bloggers who were invited, the Green Giant Team, their stellar PR firm (best firm I’ve ever dealt with), and the local peeps who helped to make it a wonderful event.

table (Free Coupon Giveway!) I Entered Into The Valley Of The Jolly Green GiantAnd know I ate good food, riiight? Just look at those vegetables! There was other stuff, too. Like pie. Just sayin’.

coupons (Free Coupon Giveway!) I Entered Into The Valley Of The Jolly Green GiantSo I brought a little bit of the valley back home with me to share with you. Five commenters will each win one coupon for a free package of Green Giant Valley Fresh Steamers frozen vegetables. Because free food is fun. And vegetable-ing is good for you.

5 random winners will be announced on the right sidebar of the blog on Sunday, October 2nd. Green Giant paid for my travel and expenses. I was not required to write about the event, nor was I compensated for this blog post. Photos courtesy of Green Giant Veggies.

I love it when bloggers go on these trips and report back to the masses. How do they keep the soil from becoming stripped of its nutrients? Do they rotate crops, add organic fertilizer, or do you know? Thanks for the giveaway!

    • Yum Yucky says:

Hey Mary, I’m so excited that I know the answer to this question! hehe. Yes, they do rotate the crops to give the soil a break. Not sure about organic fertilizer, but I did learn that they do NOT just spray mass pesticides. They handle it on a case by case basis depending on what might be attacking the crops and do all they can to keep pesticides to a minimum. There’s even one year they pointed out where no pesticides were needed at all. =)

  11. One Halloween, many years ago, my husband and I had to dress up for a costume party for at his co-worker’s house. We went as the Jolly Green Giant and Little Green Sprout; hubby is a foot taller than me:)

I actually bought some Green Giant corn at the store tonight! I’m not making that up. Why was I shopping so late? Good question, but I did buy some and thought of this post while doing it.

  18. LB says:

Looks like a fun and educational trip! thanks for the giveaway!

  19. GiGi says:

My neighbor was the guy who created the Jolly Green Giant (as well as the Keebler Elves)!! Sadly… he died about 2 weeks ago of a sudden heart attack! :(

    Eat your veggies everyone! :)

    • @somerskys says:

@GiGi, IHIS MADE MY SOUL SAD,:( I AM SOO SORRY ABOUT UR NEIGHBOR, CAUSE NOW THE WORLD IS VOID, AN EMPTY SPACE EXIST OF A VERY! VERY! VERY! CREATIVE PERSON.:(

  20. Katie M. says:

Green Giant is really great. My mother worked for them as a kid and has lots of fun stories. They also leased my grandfathers land from him after he was too old to do fieldwork. When they harvested peas they’d always fill up 5 gallon buckets of shucked peas for us. They were always really nice!

  21. Woo Hoo! Green Giant! (You kinda have to sing it!) I love my vegetables and enjoy the Green Giant brand. It’s one I can trust.

  22. Heidi says:

What an awesome experience! I think a lot of food manufacturers get a bad rap – even the ones that aren’t producing Doritos & Twinkies, so it was interesting to get a behind the scenes glance.
I am impressed with what Green Giant is doing, especially what they’ve done to decrease their need for pesticides.
It definitely makes me proud to buy their products (and I’ve been getting le seuer peas by the case since I was a baby!). Great post, Josie!

  23. That plate of farm fresh vegetables is reason enough to go to Minnesota. What a fun trip Josie! Look at you in those fields! :)

  24. Amy Chiabotta says:

    I love me some veggies!!!

  25. Angi says:

Yum! I actually loved that shot of the plate o’ veggies. Personally, I don’t use niblets – I rather buy fresh, but my father loves Green Giant’s corn niblets.

  26. Melinda says:

That plate of vegetables did look AWESOME!!!

  27. CherylM. says:

    I love these vegetables already.

  28. Cheryl says:

    I love the steamers

  29. heather says:

Oh, please, pick me! I love Green Giant veggies!!! If I don’t have a salad at lunch, I have frozen veggies :)

  30. merri says:

Oh I remember niblets! I used to LOVE those when I was a kid! I forgot those even existed! Somehow, I never see green giant products in the grocery stores in SF. Or maybe they’re just always more $$ than the other brands and so I kind of block them out? I’ll take my free coupon though if I win, and FIND some green giant somewhere, because I love veggies, esp if theyre free. That looks like a fun, and informative, trip!

  31. What a great experience – I just love corn in all it’s unrefined forms and the kids get it served up regularly in many different recipes!
