Greedy Kid #2 Models the Garmin Forerunner 305

Well lookie here! That’s my Greedy Kid #2 on the cross country course at Brandywine Creek State Park. The park is ranked as having one of the toughest courses on the entire East Coast. Kid #2 has only been running competitively for one year. His best 5K time last season was 19.25 minutes and he’s done ever better since then. BOOM!
Kid #2 just finished 9th grade and is training hard this summer to decrease his 5K into the 18-minute realm. He’s gonna bust some azz as he keeps developing because he’s got talent AND he’s disciplined about his training, which also includes Rodney Yee Yoga.
I took him out to the Brandywine course today with his new Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS. I couldn’t justify this purchase for myself, especially back when the 305 was over $300 and I despised running.
But now? The priced has plummeted, so I just had to invest in this tech tool for my kid. And I can “steal” it from him when I go out on my own happy runs. Its appearance looks to be a bit clunky, but it’s still pretty lightweight and can be used across other workout platforms, like biking, skiing and windsurfing. It can withstand a few splashes on it, but I’ve read complaints around the Internet from people who have actually swam with it. It doesn’t appear to be suitable for that.
Amazon.com’s review of the Garmin 305 is thorough as hell, so check out that. I also asked my kid to share his 3 favorite things about his Garmin. He especially loves:
- Distance tracking and pace.
- Auto splits.
- Heart rate monitoring and calories burned.
If you haven’t heard of Garmin until now, get familiar with it. But if you’ve been pondering a Garmin for awhile? Don’t wait anymore… just do it.

i have the same garmin, and LOVE it. did you get the HRM, too? that’s kinda fun. i don’t yet know what the heck i am supposed to do with the numbers (zones, etc), but it is fun to see the wavy lines when i graph it!
congrats to Greedy#2 for striving to improve. That, i believe, is one of the secrets to happiness.

Yep! he has that heart rate strap thingy, too. This thing has a lot going on and he’s still learning about all the functions. I’m just glad I could get him this gift. He’s has so much potential!

Honestly. I think no. It won’t help you find that run-love. But it will enhance any remnants of love you might already have for the run. The love itself I found by running in a way that is fun and challenging. I do speed work so I’m constantly having to change my pace and think about my next moves – whether a hi/low pace and if I can maintain higher speeds until I reach my designated land marks. It’s like a game for me now. I’ve been doing this for over a month. But before that? Running sucked.

That’s Awesome! It’s so important that kids at his age find discipline in the sports they love and take part in. I love hearing how he is not just settling for his 19.25 5K time but, is working harder to shave more time off. LOVE IT!! Tell him I’ll take his 19.25 time…Heck I’ll be happy with a 28min 5K!!! LOL! Keep up the great work Josie! xoxo
P.S. Ahhhh I’m up!!
Love it!

You have might fiiiine looking kids – greedy or not! I love my Garmin. And I love their customer service. I had an old 405 (like *many* years old) and it was flaking out and they sent me a refurbished one for only $75.

That’s great that Greedy Kid #2 is so serious about his running and that you invested in a Garmin for him. I bet he’s even greedier now that he’s running cross country.

Giiirl, he’s extra Greedy. He’s pretty health-conscious, but still a sucker for the crappy kid cereals.

I just bought this to try to get my time down some and know how far I’m running. I really like it so far, though I may chime back in to figure out how to work all of the functions…

Awesome! You have an amazingly talented kid. I will never run even close to that fast. And I need to get me a garmin eventually, seems that’s the model most people like the best.
