3 Things People Treat Better Than Their Bodies
November 3rd, 2010 • 28 Comments | Leave a Comment »
Some people love things and stuff, and maybe even other people more than they are willing to love themselves through self-care. Join me as I bitch about it just a little bit.
1) Hair and Nails ‘n Stuff
Well, yes. These things are technically part of the body, but it’s a crime when someone is so caught up in their hair and nails that they neglect to care for the other parts of their body that are screaming for healthy attention. This brings to mind some obese woman who take great pride in their appearance, but only limit it to their hair, nails, trendy clothes, designer handbags and shoes, while neglecting to address a more serious matter – their obesity issue. Why spend 2 hours in a hair salon or 4 hours shopping, but not so much as 15 minutes on exercise?
2) Automobiles and Electronics
Some people (mostly guys) go to great lengths to ensure the proper maintenance and protection of their car and electronics. They get regular oil changes and you won’t find a speck of trash in their vehicle. If the Xbox isn’t working right, they’re quick to troubleshoot the problem and get it back in action asap. But as for their body’s proper maintenance? No way. Will they troubleshoot their weight gain with healthy solutions? No again.
3) Kids and Animals
These two can be interchanged, of course. Because my own kids are a BUNCH OF FRACKIN’ ANIMALS….and vice versa.
I’m not coming down on the people who are good to their kids. You should be good to your kids, dammit. But don’t sacrifice your own well being in the process of caring for your children. They should not be blamed for why you are not caring for yourself properly – whether it be physically, emotionally, or whatever. This type of self care is a decision, and you have to make room for it.
There are lots of moms I hear whine about not being able to shower on any given day, because their baby is too demanding and somehow won’t allow it. Well put the baby in the crib – she won’t melt if she cries – and then go wash up, or take 30 minutes to do an exercise DVD or fix your hair and pluck your chin hairs. If you have kids, please, take care of yourself. I see a lot of spiffed up, vibrant kids walking around next to a run down mom whose weight is climbing as she dons a tumbleweed hair-do and baby food stains on her clothes. That needs to stop.
And then you have the animal lover whose canine gets regular vet checkups and the best of dog food life has to offer. But the animal owner himself hasn’t been to the doc in years and eats McDonald’s for dinner.
Even as I rant about what other people aren’t doing right [insert free speech disclaimer here], I’m also using this an as opportunity to examine where I fall short. My weakest area is putting other people before myself way too often. The negative impact of this self neglect many times shows up in my attitude, my energy level and my physical appearance. But this is going to change….immediately.
I WILL do more to treat myself better. Won’t you join me in this promise?

I was one of those moms. My 4 kiddos came first, their meals, bedtimes, school, sports, friends, church, homework, you name it. I had 4 in 6 years, so I can remember times when I did not have a hot dinner for many nights (hubby in military and not around much). Days were spent doing for them, and once they were in bed I started cleaning the house, laundry, etc. I can’t complain, they are successful, smart, God-loving and serving, productive members of society. However, my weight slowly climbed for those 18 or so years. Despite that, I was active with them, playing outside, riding bikes, nightly walks, etc. Now that 3 are out of the house, I am starting to see that I was shortchanged. I did it to myself by thinking I was doing right by them. I wish I had read this post all those years ago, but mothers are programmed to sacrifice for their children whether they realize it or not. I have started my OWN eating and exercise plan, and I am doing it for me. And you are correct, they would have turned out the same if I had taken half hour a day for me. GREAT POST

I agree totally. I want my kids to be proud of their active mom and I want to set an example.

Women are grossly negligent of themselves in the guise of caring for others. It is sad actually.
I was so afraid to leave the house earlier this year because I thought the family would implode without me, eventhough my role was from a bed – I did nothing but make sure everything ran by my direction. You realize what almost happened Josie. I will never make that mistake again. What is the point of losing yourself to take care of others when you aren’t yourself anyway.
Doesn’t make sense.
PS – I come way before the dogs – and what exactly is a pedi and a mani. My 18 year old gave me my last haircut btw. [I am not kidding. Can I borrow the pumpkin?]

Yes.
It’s not funny. It’s dead serious, and it could seriously kill me. If not maim me for life.
I need to KEEP myself on the list. Especially when family comes. So this too, I pledge with you.

I tried to guess before opening this post. I guessed: Their car, their house, their pets. Now let me read and see if I was close.

To be serious: For years I made the excuse that I had no time to go to the dentist. You can imagine the results. I have a group of missing teeth (in the back where you cannot see them.) I don’t know where my brain was… and this goes back to before kids. 20-somethings don’t think about teeth but they do think about their wardrobe constantly. I am bringing my kids up better.
The kids get all dentist and doctor visits (as they should!) but I didn’t visit the OB/GYN for three years. Recently I finally got my ass (and other associated relevant parts) in there and he was nice; no lecture, just a reminder to come back in once per year and I’m keeping that promise now. See? I’m learning!

You make a really good point here. I know I am guilty of not treating my body as well as I should. As well as it deserves to be treated.

Yep, I put lots of things before my health and body. My job is my main culprit…cutting exercise out in order to put in more overtime. My husband and family sometimes are culprits too. The other things like my car, nails, and hair are just as much in shambles as me when I don’t take care of myself. I promise to treat myself better!

Lots to think abut here Josie & I agree with you. We so often put everything & everyone else before ourselves. I see this a lot with animals too. Nothing wrong with loving your per but love yourself enough too to care for you!
Here in southern CA, animal treats, clothes, baby carriages & more are a lucrative business, even in this economy!

Hmm good points. I see these things in other people. Since I am single, childless, petless and even car-less, it’s easy for me to do your pledge. But I fully understand how hard it is for people who have responsibilities. I hope they remember that they’re still worth it.

Oh my goodness, good points! People do treat all of the above better than their bodies! Meanwhile, it’s not your pretty hair and nails that are going to get to live to 100 (that’s my goal). Nice pic of the guy with the gynecomastia. He needs a black leather bra.

Ah yes, the oxygen mask theory! I agree – you have to make time for you health because it’s not going to take care of itself. And I also agree on the kids = animals. That is exactly why we have no pets. The last thing I need is another butt to clean up after or another thing barfing on the carpet next to my bed in the middle of the night.

I love this post. Yum, you hit the nail right on the head and everyone needs to read this. Never thought about it that way but now that you mention it, I do know a guy that will quickly get his Xbox fixed but will not even as much as walk for 15 minutes to get some exercise.

Haha! I just got one of those Kinect cameras for my Xbox and now it gets to help troubleshoot my worthless bod. Take that you devilishly fun time vampire. Anyway, I’ve been using it since thursday and I have to say I’m getting a pretty decent workout. My knees are killing me though. Probably because most of these games require a lot more movement than the Wii.
