Because Smashing Your Breasts in a Vice is the Cool Thing to Do

I was gonna use the Boobs Guy at first for free services, but decided to go traditional and fork out the $75 co-pay to the radiologist. Live Tweeting during the mammogram was considered, but I opted for streaming video. Did you see it?

My mammogram was routine. I’ve had the damn script in my wallet since January, but only now decided to get it done. I was given a clean bill of breast health after one round of pics. I was allowed to go home. But every other woman in that office was pulled to the side for additional breast-pictures, followed by closed-door conversations with the doctor. (yikes!)

From WebMD: Many small tumors can be seen on a mammogram before they can be felt by a woman or her health professional. Cancer is most easily treated and cured when it is discovered in an early stage. Mammograms do not prevent breast cancer or reduce a woman’s risk of developing cancer. But regular mammograms can reduce a woman’s risk of dying from breast cancer by detecting a cancer when it is more easily treated.

If you’re between the ages of 40-50 and care enough to exercise and eat right, you should also care enough to talk to your doctor about your next mammogram. I’m only 37, but there were risk factors involved. I had my first mammogram at the age of 28.

Do the cool thing. Go get your breasts smashed into a vice. But if you’re not quite 40 yet, do the next best thing. Go pester the older friends and family ladies that you love. Make sure they mammogram-it.

YAY for you for getting it done. So many of us just let it go. One of my first published pieces was on young moms with breast cancer, some in their early 20s, with no family history. It made an impact on me and I swore I’d never e one of those women who lets it go. I’ve been blessed with good health and no risk factors or family history, but I still go regularly because you just never know. And hats off to you for getting the word out.

You did it!  Those risk factors can be pretty scary.  I’m glad you have another year (or whatever it is) of clean breast health.

I’m sure I would be the right height for that machine, but…I don’t think even the professional vices can get a good smash.  I’m that teeny there.  But that was probly TMI anyway…

You should receive a gold star for getting it done. While I am not at the age where a mammogram is required, I did have a cousin who had breast cancer twice while in her mid-to-late thirties. As a result my doctor stresses that I should be doing monthly self exams….which I have NOT been doing. Reading your post has once again motivated me to do this for my health. I will also be pestering those ladies that I love who are between 40-50 to get their mammo’s done.

Maybe I’m going out on a limb here but I don’t think Mr. Free Mammogram has your best interest in mind! :D

Thanks for sharing and giving us permission to pester the women we love to get their mammography on. It’ll be like a glam photo session for boobies!

One thing I love about this blog is that you always manage to blend humor into serious matters. I wanted desperately to comment with a joke but on this one but just can’t — lost a good friend to this disease many years back — she was 29.

Good job propping the awareness!

Glad you opted for the real thing. Good on you to stay on top of this at 28-37 so many of us should follow your example! Happy you got a clean bill of health :)

You’re never too young to get checked! I had a lump form when I was in middle school and it took me years to get the courage to talk to my mom about it (right before starting my 2nd year of college). I had to get an ultrasound – which was inconclusive – then a mammogram which was also inconclusive. It wasn’t until I had the tumor removed, analyzed for 3 days by the hospital, that they were able to tell that it was a benign tumor.

I think women should get checked at least starting in their twenties; treat it like a visit the optometrist – you go about once every decade and once you hit your forties you start going more often for check-ups/changes. Give yourself regular check-ups too.

You had your first at 28? I have never had one..but my doctor would have suggested it prob if I needed one…she did check herself the last physical. My grandma died of breast cancer. I should do my self exams tho..im bad that I don’t.
