Greedy Proof That No Exercise is Good For You

Me, not exercising at the wave pool. Except the waves didn’t come yet.

Are you the poster child for functional fitness? There can be more than child on the poster, so let’s make it a group photo. Who says a workout isn’t a real workout unless you put on special sneakers and cardio at the gym?

It’s summertime, people. There are so many ways to exercise without technically exercising, and you might end up burning more calories. I’ve been running my azz off and doing other “technically exercise” stuff, but when you spend 6 hours at a water park – walking and splashing and mermaiding in water without barely sitting down the whole time – that’s better than a 5-mile run in the ugly humidity.

Then there’s hiking and leisure biking, or gardening and mowing the lawn. There’s beach-frolicking with sandcastles and volleyball. That’s all exercise, too. Summer isn’t over, so I suggest you enjoy it to the fullest with some “not-exercising” functional fitness.

Don’t freak if you miss out on a technical workout. If you simply focus on having a great time this summer, you will indeed be getting a healthy dose of exercise.

….and now in other news…. Greedy Baby tearing up my house again. I caught her sticking Honey Nut Chex in the air vents.

How do YOU do functional fitness. That is, exercising without technically exercising?

I love greedy baby.
I have to go with yardwork. I sweat more doing that than my normal workout!

I go for walks on the beach. I play in the sand. I clean my room.

AND SHOP! I didn’t use to enjoy shopping, since I could never fit into clothes, and that got me sad and depressed. But I went on Tuesday (since my mom gets old people discounts on Tuesdays at Ross) and it was amazing!

I fit into everything I picked out and I could actually decide if I wanted something or NOT (based on how it fit, colors, style, etc.) And I ended up shopping for 4 hours.

That is a bloody workout. I came home sore and tired. How do women do it every day?!

wait a sec. Some women shop everyday? Rich bitches, huh?.

I go shopping at a huuuuuuuuuuge box store.  With Chickadee in wheelchair and a full cart behind me.  It never fails that I forget something clearacrossthestore.  I’ve worn my pedometer and I always clock in around 2 and a half miles there. Then the upper body workout of wrestling with the chair and cart…I’m sore after.

That or go for a walk. Or a ‘swim’ as the only adult watching 3 kids bwahahaha.

Josie Reply:

say wha? 2.5 miles in the store? Plus Chickadee-ing? You are amazing.

I guess my biggest functional fitness is walking. Not for exercise, but to get places. I live in the city and don’t have a car, so I either use the bus/subway, or walk (usually both). And there are A LOT of hills in SF. Its totally impossible to not exercise each day unless I don’t leave the house (which does happen sometimes). Going out dancing in clubs is also exercising because, well, youre dancing. For hrs. unfortunately, I do not do any of those other playing type things you described. Or maybe fortunately, in the lawn mowing case. :)

We walk our errands…walk as a family…dance while doing housework as well as lunges and such

I consider shopping “exercise”- especially the BIG grocery shopping trips, or during christmas time. lugging those packages around the mall takes work! Plus I swap the elevator/escalator for the stairs when I can. SOmetimes I find it quicker, anyway!

I used to be that girl that freaked out if I missed a sweat session at the gym, but I’m over that phase of my life. I still workout, but if it doesn’t fit into my schedule, I just try to walk more—that’s one thing I love about NYC!

I got nothin’

these days 99.9% of my fitness is functional :)
the better question is WHEN DO YOU GET TO THE GYM AND EXERCISE LIKE THE NONMAMAS?

Every time you post a pic of Greedy Baby I think to myself – I’ve gotta kidnap that kid, she’s just so darn cute!!

But yeah, I’m also a big fan of the non-exercise type exercise. In fact, that’s pretty much the only time I get exercise. *ahem*

[Reply]

Josie Reply:

Child kidnapping burns 1,000 calories per minutes, but only after you get arrested and start thinking about that time in the slammer.

I’ve been swimming a lot more this summer. At first I would want to do laps all the time, but I enjoy it so much that I’m being way more leisurely and making sure that I stick to enjoying this and not make it work.

Katie @ Health for the Whole Self July 30th, 2010 at 9:35

I love functional exercise! Over the summer my husband and I take a lot of short trips where we do a lot of walking and exploring. Even though I’m not technically “exercising,” I’m definitely on my feet all day and exhausted by the end of it! :)

Since Sam came I am lifting 8lbs through out the day, doing constant laundry, dishes, cleaning the apt. So having a child has been lots of non intentional exercise for me, especially with my bad arm.

I’m printing out this post and pinning it on my calendar (the one that has been rather empty of gone-to-the-gym checkmarks this summer).

I never think to count the functional fitness, like playing with the dog or de-junking and having a garage sale.

Baby is soooooooooooo cute! Thank goodness she is there though! :-)

We got to keep telling people that there are many ways to “exercise” and get you active on!!! Have fun & enjoy! Good for you Josie!

My job! I work in a fast-paced coffee shop as a shift manager and have to hustle all the time! Our coffee comes in 5lb bags and I carry as many as I can at a time. I lift at least 15-20lb boxes multiple times/day. I sweep, mop, windex the store daily – let’s not forget serving customers and having to be hyper all the time which requires a lot of energy. I also ride my bike to and from work as fast as I can. I am usually sweaty most of the day but luckily none of the customers can tell – nasty! After we close our doors and get to the real cleaning, I never walk – only run around the store so I can get out and get home! I love it tho, I feel so physically tired after my shift but it’s a good tired and my arms are so buff now!

I’ll tell you what was actually a work-out and didn’t seem like it really would be: filling up thousands of water balloons. Or rather bagging them while others filled them. I had to bend down for 5 hours straight putting 20 water balloons into each bag. My back was so sore the next day, but I am sure it was defined too. ;)

Functional exercise is totally the best kind of exercise.  I like long strolls in the evening, splashing in the ocean, hiking/frolicking/mountain climbing.  It’s so nice to move and not feel like that’s the “agenda”, ya know?

You’re so right! Exercising should be fun! Get outdoors and go for a run or play tennis. Bike rides are great, as well as a brisk walk! So worth it!

Working out too much can be so stressful! Get outside and play with your friends and family, that’s enough!

Look after three small children all day and you won’t need any more excercie!
