The produce section
just exploded and landed in a bunch of new Lightlife Frozen Meals. They
just popped up at my grocer. I thought they were econo-brand, but
Lightlife is the same company that makes those Smart meals, like these.
mission is "veggie goodness for you and the planet". Their favorite
veggie nouns are Crisp, Sweet, BIG, Hearty, and Thick – and that's
exactly what I got in my Linguine Siciliano meal; a blend of sweet
peppers, tomatoes, white beans and asparagus over whole grain
But, oh damn. The pasta
is a mushy mess, the veggies are water-logged, and the flavor was apparently abducted by aliens, because it's gone. Either that, or someone ripped out my taste buds when I wasn't
I can appreciate the concept of low sodium and whole grains with excellent fiber and protein, but if you
can't come with the delectable goodness, I gotta send you packin'.
But the insanity isn't over yet. Package directions require the sauce packet to be
thawed in hot water and cannot be opened without the hand strength of a
Yeti. I didn't feel like dealing with snow monsters, so I used a
knife instead. Either way, it's not convenient.
ate the entire meal due to caloric desperation, but I may do a store
return anyhow…. in upchuck form. Lightlife needs to regroup and find
some flavor if they want to compete with the Big Dawgs of healthy
frozen food. Lean Cuisine continues to reign supreme.
