The Other Side of the Scale

It’s time for my blogger pal Erin to take the stage! She’s a talented artist, avid baker, and one who is overcoming the grip of anorexia (I was shocked when I first saw the picture of Erin below in her former size zero).
Yum Yucky’s laughs, jokes, and ridiculous silliness will resume at its regularly scheduled time tomorrow. Now grab a doughnut banana and read on!
The Other Side of the Scale
If you’re like me, you love Josie’s sense of humor toward food and exercise. She’s always talking about people on the heavier side of the scale, but what about people who are way too thin? I thought it would be a good idea for me to share my story and battle with anorexia.
My father always told me I was never pretty and that I had to lose weight. I was around 120 lbs in high school and felt fat everyday. I started to lose weight in my Junior year and by the time I was a Senior I weighed 93 lbs. I would not eat one day, gorge on food the next, and was disgustingly skinny. My bones were sticking out and I had little energy. I also stopped getting my period. I pushed myself away from my family so I wouldn’t have to eat in front of them.
By the end of the year I got sick of my lifestyle and tried to get better. I got to about 100 lbs and stayed at that weight for about two years. Although I was never really happy with my weight I wasn’t fully healthy either. I would count calories everyday and make sure I had a good workout. I couldn’t stand relaxing and resting.
After the car accident I realized that I had to get healthy. I gained 5 more lbs and stayed at the weight for another few years. Overcoming anorexia is an ongoing process. Today I am about
112 lbs and happy. My husband says that I’ve never looked better and that I am healthy! I get my period and have energy. I’ve learned how to rest and relax and enjoy the life around me. I still
watch what I eat and exercise, but not to the extent of what I use to.
I don’t count my calories everyday either. I still look in the mirror and shake my head at what I don’t like about my body, but not enough to alter my new healthy lifestyle. I am finally happy!

Hi Josie,
Thanks for introducing Erin here today.
Hi Erin,
Well…I am like you…I love Josie’s sense of humor when it comes to food and exercise! She is so fun to read!
And thank you for sharing your story here today. It is the side we here so much less about. And it can be equally as dangerous as veering too far on the other side of the scale. I have to think that this was especially hard having your father fuel this feeling of worth based upon looks/weight. And no matter what, no matter where you’re at in your life – your true beauty comes from what’s inside – and I really feel that beauty shining out in your words today. Erin, you are doing great today, and your picture today really shows that – you look so healthy, and even beyond that, you look happy…

Thank you for sharing your story! You are just beautiful and look radiant and healthy. I had a family member that struggled with an eating disorder and it was really hard on her. She too has recovered, but it is still a struggle on some days.

Totally unrelated, but the (healthy) Erin reminds of the chick on my high school cheer squad we’d throw up into basket tosses. Like this http://www.mountida.edu/filelibrary/cheercbasket.JPG
