Taste Test: Tastykake Low Fat Chocolate Iced Vanilla Cupcakes

Immediately after my cake & pizza therapy session in the comments of this blog post, I tripped on a box of Tastykake’s Low Fat Chocolate Iced Vanilla Cupcakes. Ooo-la-la.

Never mind that this treat is low fat. Tastykakes have no place in my cake recovery program, yet here I am doing a Taste Test on the pseudo-forbidden. I don’t normally delve into products labeled low fat because they usually turn out to be disappointing, nasty versions of the original product. And I’ll be damned, I was right again. These low fat cupcakes are obscene.

The cupcake itself isn’t as sugary as a regular Tastykake, which is fine, but it leaves a terrible after taste. And whatever is done to make this cupcake low fat also prevents it from having a moist texture and fresh taste. The cupcake is stiff and stale-like straight out of the package. This is what I get for being Greedy. I wasted my money on a bum product.

If you don’t have the caloric reserves to eat a real Tastykake don’t waste your time on the low fat version. The company also makes a low fat Raspberry Coffee Cake that you’ll never catch in my jaws.

CUPCAKE NOTES

Calories 170 (1 pkg/2 cakes), Fat 2.5g, Carbs 33g, Fiber 0g, Sugars 21g, Protein 2g

Reactions from the Taste Test Crew

Greedy Kid #1It stinks. I means it really smells bad. And did the Tastykake people actually taste this before they put it in stores? It’s really bad.

Greedy Kid #2 – (after one bite) You can tell its low fat. I don’t want anymore.

Greedy Kid #3I don’t like it….Wait, I DO like it. Can I have more?

Yum Up! to: Taste experiments that prove you can give a Greedy 4 year-old low fat sweets and they will still like it.

Yuck Down! to: Cake products served stale on purpose.

My wife returned these after we bought them because they were so bad. “Tasty” is false advertising. They did refund our money. Love the website!

I was going to return them but the Greedy 4 year-old got sneaky, opened all the packages, and ate the chocolate icing off the tops.
