Taste Test: Del Monte Fruit Chillers Sorbet

What’s this? Sorbet in the canned fruit isle? This sneaky treat has been around awhile but got past me. Sorbet is my favorite frozen treat so, yes, you may call me a Sorbet Connesseiur. Del Monte Fruit Chillers have both good and bad points so pay attention.

First up is Strawberry Snow Storm flavor. Oh look! It’s not a block of colored sugar ice like freezer pops. Although the taste is slightly watered down in comparison to the really good stuff you get in restaurants, it has a pretty good sorbet consistency. The fruitiness is definitely there and it doesn’t have that terrible artificial taste. Ahhh, refreshing.

Wait a minute…I’ve got brain freeze.

Up next is Grape Berry Blizzard. Hey, what the heck happened? It’s like night and day. It reminds me of grape soda and even smells like it. The artificial flavor-ness is through the roof. And it doesn’t even have the same sorbet-like consistency I just got hooked on. Grape is a dud that reminds me of a freezer pop.  I threw it in trash after two bites and ate an apple instead.

The Freeze & Eat tubes are a good sized snack that can satisfy your taste buds but I only recommend Strawberry Snow Storm. And one note of caution – they melt really fast so don’t set is down, forget about it, then try to eat it.

Here’s the nutrition facts:

Calories 55, Fat 0g, Sugars 11g, Carbs 13g, Protein 0g, Fiber <1g

Fruit Chillers Sorbets also come in 170 calorie cups in these flavors:

  • Grape Berry Blizzard
  • Frosty Peach
  • Arctic Strawberry
  • Glacial Mango
  • Polar Raspberry

Del Monte’s Fruit Chillers website is a must to check out with sorbet recipe tips, special offers, and a really cool interactive calorie comparison to other frozen treats, cakes & cookies, and fruity snacks like Skittles.

Reactions from the Taste Test Crew

Health-hater Husband: Strawberry is smooth, creamy, and full of flavor but Grape tastes like an icey or cheap water ice. It doesn’t have the same smooth consistency.

Greedy Kid #1: Strawberry reminds me of real Italian water ice. Grape flavor smells nasty so I’m not going to taste it.

Greedy Kid #2: I like both flavors.

Yum Up! to: Sweet strawberry snack-ification for only 55 calories.

Yuck Down! to: Grape soda, brain freeze, and a husband who lets melted Fruit Chiller juice spill onto the couch.

where did you find the tubes? We only have the kind in the cups?

I found the tubes in the same section as the cups. Maybe your store just doesn’t sell the cups? :C
